Whale Watching On The Power Boat
Today we went whale watching on the power boat. The day started out with high visibility even though it was a bit foggy. We drank hot coco as we accelerated towards the open ocean in search for the beasts of the deep. Traffic on the water was almost non existent because of the low wind conditions, we only encountered 3 other boats. Almost immediately after we got out of the bay we encountered a pod of dolphins enjoying some breakfast from a bait ball (small fish swarm in a tightly packed spherical formation about a common centre. It is a last-ditch defensive measure adopted by small schooling fish when they are threatened by predators). We spectated the action form the dolphins until we spotted a gray whale spouting in the distance, we quickly caught up with the whale by harnessing the power of our engines! Excitement was building as we grew closer, keeping a safe distance of course. As we came up parallel of the whale, we watched as its fluke rose from the water and then disappeared back into the depths. What an amazing experience to see the whale make its way south, surfacing and diving multiple times before we made our way back to shelter island marina. What a blast!
