For years, we were searching for a larger classic sailing yacht to enhance the Sail San Diego fleet. One that could comfortably host larger groups while still delivering the classic, intimate sailing experience we’re known for here at Sail San Diego.
We weren’t looking for just any boat. We wanted something timeless. Something with character. A sailing yacht that felt special the moment you stepped aboard.
When Maile came onto our radar, Cal, the owner of Sail San Diego and two of our captains flew out to Hawaii to see her in person.
Maile had the classic lines we were looking for, a spacious and comfortable layout ideal for hosting larger groups on board, and a presence that felt both elegant and welcoming.
From Hawaii to San Diego
Maile was purchased at the end of 2024 and carefully prepped in Hawaii before making her way to San Diego aboard a cargo ship. Once Maile arrived in San Diego in January of 2025, our crew got straight to work. Over the course of five months, she went through an extensive refit process with multiple upgrades to prepare her for charters.
From mechanical systems and safety updates to comfort upgrades and thoughtful finishing touches, every detail was handled with intention. Our crew poured countless hours into making sure Maile met and exceeded our standards for safety and comfort for our guests.
The Refit Process
As part of our refit, we completed an extensive series of upgrades throughout the vessel. Starting on deck, we installed all-new brightwork, new sun pads and cockpit cushions, upgraded running lights and mast lighting, an outdoor sound system, modern navigation electronics and an emergency radio, along with a hull buff and wax and fresh antifouling paint.
Below deck, we did a complete refresh with new cushions, and pillows. We added modern LED cabin lighting, installed new electric freshwater heads along with all new plumbing hoses, pumps, and tanks, and upgraded the refrigeration systems. Additional improvements include a Bluetooth stereo with new speakers, fresh varnish on all interior brightwork, updated paint, headliner restoration, and sole restoration.
In the engine and mechanical spaces, we focused on reliability and performance. This included new electrical equipment and wiring, updated fuses and circuit controls, rebuilt hydraulic systems, rebuilt automatic and manual bilge pumps, a new variable-speed freshwater pump, and all new freshwater hoses. We also rebuilt the engine electrical controls and alarms, installed a new engine starter and relays, rebuilt the seawater heat exchanger, and completed a full paint and detail of both the engine and engine room.
A Busy First Year On The Water
Since officially joining the Sail San Diego fleet in May of 2025, Maile has quickly become a guest favorite. In her first year alone, she hosted over 175 charters, welcoming groups aboard for unforgettable experiences on San Diego Bay.
